About

Shang Yang

Shang Yang, born in Chongqing in 1942, was once a professor and vice president of Hubei Academy of Fine Arts. Now he is a professor of the Academy of Fine Arts of Capital Normal University, vice chairman of the Chinese Oil Painting Society, and a researcher of the Academy of Oil Painting of China National Academy of Painting. Shang Yang is the most ‘advancing artist’ of the era. From early realism to late postmodernism, he changes the artistic form and style constantly, and sets up a unique expressionism style. Apparently his work series since "Dong Qichang Plan" has been the classic examples of his long-term thinking, and express in his own way to introduce traditional Chinese culture into the contemporary era.
On June 4, 2020, Shang Yang was ranked 36th in the "2020 Hurun Chinese Art List". His works are collected by the National Art Museum of China, the Shanghai Art Museum, the University of Hong Kong Museum of Fine Arts, the Youth Museum of Revine Palace, foreign art institutions and private collections internally and abroad.

Shang Yang is sensitive to modern art and has profound Chinese cultural accomplishment. His paintings can hardly be summarized by any style, but he can clearly feel the existence of a modern art spirit. In other words, he reinterprets the Chinese national spirit in the language of modern art. Taking the loess and the Yellow River as images, he extracted a very general form, and exalted the spirit of a local culture through the tension of the form itself. Shang Yang stands out from many painters who depict the loess and the Yellow River precisely because he does not reproduce the subject matter, but the form of expression. However, the form is not merely an abstract visual relationship, but a kind of spiritual power condensed in the semi-abstract image. Because in those images, the characters and geomorphological and ecological features of the Loess Plateau are transformed into the form of tension, directly arousing the dignified and ancient civilization consciousness through the visual experience.

In my opinion, Shang Yang proposed the question of how to construct contemporary value by drawing lessons from traditional painting with his works Dong Qichang Plan series, and its significance should not be underestimated.
