Georg Baselitz

About

Georg Baselitz

Georg Baselitz is a representative artist
of the German Neo-Expressionism. Born and raised in 1938 in what is now East Germany's Saxony, he is both a painter and sculptor. He is one of Germany's most famous living artists, with a career spanning more than 50 years. His work has consistently challenged mainstream art and revolves around collective, historical and personal themes.

George Baselitz developed a style of expressive figure painting that recreated legendary heroes and mythological figures. Starting in the mid-1960s, Baselitz tried to create paintings using a method called "image inversion". In such paintings, inverted figures seem to rise, gravity reverses, strong colors and broad, bold brushstrokes create a unique image.
